| Nathaniel Lucas Appointed Superintendent of Carpenters.
To Lt Paterson. Norfolk Island
July 14th 1795
Sir,
The enclosed is a return of the Storekeeper, superintendent’s etc. who are alive and in the Execution of their respective duties. The Master Carpenter Mr. William Peate died on the 11th June, his Age & Infirmities having long rendered him of little Service. I have taken upon me to appoint Nathaniel Lucas to continue in the discharge of that Duty, which he has always done, from the First Day this Island was Settled to the present time. In recommending this Man to Succeed to the late Carpenter’s Appointment I am alone actuated by the great and repeated Services he has rendered Government and the Public in conducting the Buildings and having completed a well finished Watermill which is perfect in construction, & and answers every Public Purpose. I also beg to observe that He has very great Merit in constructing a most substantial Wharf & Crane at Cascade Bay, which I have more particularly noticed in my letter No. 1?
I am
Philip Gidley King
